Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin has once again praised the Worldcoin (WLD) team’s efforts in strengthening privacy measures in its platform.
In a recent post, Buterin expressed his appreciation for Worldcoin’s proactive response to privacy concerns raised by critics. He noted the team had demonstrated a dedication to reducing data usage.
His words were:
“I think they’re taking the privacy criticisms very seriously and designing their systems to use less and less data.”
The Ethereum founder made the positive comments following a report that Portugal’s data regulator, the CNPD, had ordered Worldcoin to stop collecting biometric data for 90 days.
The move is the latest regulatory setback for Worldcoin’s iris-scanning project, which has faced privacy concerns in various countries.
In response to this situation, X-user Louis Anslow attempted to highlight the irony of the situation by mentioning that he had a private scan done in Portugal in 2021 using a German gem.

Commentators said the Worldcoin team has done a good job managing criticism of its iris scanning project and the way data is collected. Additionally, he expressed admiration for the modern encryption techniques the team is championing.
This latest endorsement reaffirms Buterin’s previous comments, in which he suggested that Worldcoin’s dedication to privacy surpasses other centralized authentication solutions.
Worldcoin Scanning Project
Individuals register on Worldcoin by taking an iris scan, without providing traditional identification information such as name, address, email address or phone number.
Importantly, Worldcoin incentivizes participants to get their faces scanned by offering digital IDs and free cryptocurrency WLD.
Worldcoin's website shows that more than 4.6 million people from 120 countries have registered to participate in the program.
While Worldcoin has been warmly received in countries such as Argentina, it has faced regulatory issues in others such as Kenya. Portugal is the latest country to join the list of nations under scrutiny over Worldcoin’s iris scanning project.
Earlier this week, Portugal's data regulator expressed concern about potential threats to citizens' data protection rights. The agency cited a high risk of immediate intervention to avoid serious damage.
Meanwhile, the regulator revealed that more than 300,000 people in Portugal have submitted their biometric data to Worldcoin.
