Nate Geraci, president of The ETF Store, recently said that the market is not ready for an XRP spot exchange-traded fund (ETF).
Geraci shared his views in an interview with Tony Edward on the Thinking Crypto podcast. Edward highlighted the prediction that a Solana or XRP ETF could appear by 2025, and asked Geraci to assess the likelihood of these crypto investment products coming to market.
XRP futures ETF must come first
Geraci explained that the introduction of an XRP ETF would require key developments. First, it will need to go through an approval process similar to that of Bitcoin and Ethereum, where their futures are listed on venues regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).
For example, Solana or XRP futures must be traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), he said. At the same time, Geraci pointed out that even with this premise, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) would like to see the trading records and history of XRP listed ETFs.
In other words, an XRP futures ETF needs to exist first before the market can eventually see a spot ETF for XRP. Therefore, the industry expert believes that it will take a few years for the market to see these developments.
Other ETF experts, such as Bloomberg's James Seyffart, have reiterated similar views. However, Seyffart stressed that the earliest timeline for other crypto ETFs after Ethereum is 2026.
Congress could speed up timeline
Meanwhile, the co-founder of The ETF Institute proposed an alternative route to an XRP ETF that he believes would be quicker and easier. Specifically, he recommended that the U.S. Congress establish a legal regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies.
Geraci said the framework needs to clearly define what is a security and what is a commodity, and divide regulatory responsibilities.
He believes that if such a regulatory framework were implemented, other crypto ETFs could come to market more quickly. However, he expressed doubts about the likelihood that Congress would enact such a regulation in an election year.
“What this means is that I don’t expect to see a Solana or XRP ETF come to market anytime soon,”
He said.
Meanwhile, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse believes an XRP ETF could come next year. While he is confident an XRP ETF is inevitable, he remains flexible on the exact timeline.
