Ripple has already released 1 billion XRP from its escrow account as planned, but this month’s escrow execution caught the attention of community members because of the strange memo it included.
The escrow transaction took place on the evening of July 1 via Ripple 24 and 25 wallets. Notably, the company unlocked 1 billion tokens in fragments, with one transaction worth 500 million XRP, while the other two transactions unlocked 400 million and 100 million XRP.
As always, Ripple has returned 800 million XRP to escrow, and the remainder will be put into circulation this month.
Mysterious memo follows Ripple unlock
Interestingly, this July escrow transaction came with a mysterious coded message that caught the attention of community members. Blockchain architect Marty Party drew attention to this development in a post on X.
The memo cryptically mentions Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse and prominent community member Moon Lambo. While the exact meaning of the message remains unclear, it included a wry remark suggesting that one day “XRP will power the world.”
While Marty Party hinted that a large holder had “unstaked” a large amount of XRP and left a cryptic message, it is important to clarify that this was actually Ripple’s planned escrow release in July. Furthermore, the executor of the escrow release is not responsible for the memorandum.
XRPL dUNL validator Vet clarified that anyone can create such a memo as the escrow creator does not have to perform the “escrow completion” themselves. Furthermore, the author of the mysterious message confirmed that the memo did not come from Ripple.
Similar events
Notably, this is not the first time mysterious messages have accompanied Ripple’s escrow executions. A similar incident took place during the unlock in May.
In that incident, the author left a message targeting Bitcoin maximalists who often criticize XRP enthusiasts. It noted that if the value of XRP spiked, maximalists could react in a dismissive manner: “Uh, well, well, wow, no XRP.”
Meanwhile, a more prominent case occurred in August that, while still cryptic, carries more context about events within the XRP community. Basically, Ripple’s monthly escrow unlocks have been used to deliver cryptic messages to the crypto community.
