Uniswap’s massive phishing attack caused users to lose millions of dollars
Several users have reported losing large amounts of ETH after falling victim to a phishing attack using the Uniswap V3 protocol.
According to information gathered from various sources, someone took away more than 7,500 ETH.
The cause of this incident was not the Uniswap protocol itself, but the victims’ participation in fraudulent transactions.
A Metamask security staffer was the first to discover the attack. He posted a message on Twitter notifying Uniswap that the attack had begun about two hours ago.
CZ tweeted to Uniswap reporting the attack six hours later. Zhao Changpeng claimed that Binance’s threat intelligence discovered that hackers stole 4,295 ETH. He called on the community to alert Uniswap.
Uniswap developer Hayden Adams admitted that the attack was a phishing attack and had nothing to do with the protocol. He advised users to avoid phishing and take safety measures. The smart contract appears to be normal upon inspection.
Victims received a malicious token called UniswapLP and were directed to a website to redeem UNI. The website stole important data and wallet funds. Losses totaled $8.1 million, but that number is likely to rise as more is learned.
Unlike trading through regulated traditional exchanges like Binance and FTX, speculators can trade cryptocurrencies using peer-to-peer technology. Uniswap is a central institution in decentralized finance (DeFi).
Although there are several other ways to achieve this, phishing has become one of the most common techniques used by hackers to steal cryptocurrency.
The unfortunate reality is that users must bear most of the responsibility to exercise caution in such situations; despite this, many people still click on harmful links under the false belief that they are safe.
