Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson likened the way the Ethereum network operates to a dictatorship controlled by Vitalik Buterin.
In an interview at the Token2049 conference in Singapore, the Cardano founder said in an update that the Ethereum network’s over-reliance on its 30-year-old co-founder Vitalik Buterin has undermined the blockchain’s claims of decentralization.
The founder of Cardano said that without Buterin’s influence, the Ethereum network would not be able to do anything. He co-founded the network with Buterin, which is home to the second-largest crypto asset by market cap. He further criticized Ethereum’s governance model, claiming that every plan and operation begins and ends with Buterin.
Furthermore, Hoskinson insisted that Ethereum would not be able to accomplish anything without Buterin. He said the Russian-born developer oversees everything from the next hard fork to the next steps on the blockchain roadmap.
“Everybody looks to him for the roadmap. Everybody looks to him for inspiration, and he’s the only one who has enough power to rally the people,” Hoskinsoin said, adding that without Buterin, the Ethereum network would not be able to effectively execute the next hard fork.
Notably, Hoskinson is one of the eight founders of the Ethereum network. However, his vision for the project conflicted with Buterin’s, leading to his dismissal at a 2014 meetup in Switzerland.
Buterin Revises Ethereum Roadmap
The Cardano founder also accused Buterin of modifying Ethereum’s original roadmap to shard the network, allowing the blockchain to incorporate rollups and second layers. This model is widely considered to be a measure to make blockchain more singular in order to cope with multiple chains.
With this model, the Ethereum network became scalable and accommodated multiple second-layer and zero-knowledge (zk) rollups such as Arbitrum, Base, Polygon zk, and Optimism.
According to Hoskinson, Buterin came up with the idea for L2 and pushed for this innovation until Ethereum developers accepted it. The IOHK founder explained that Ethereum prefers to reduce latency on the mainnet rather than earning fee income from these sidechains.
Cardano eliminates dictatorship and anarchy
At the same time, Hoskinson believes that the Cardano network eliminates the dictatorship of Ethereum and the anarchy on the Bitcoin network. He said the new community-driven, fully decentralized Voltaire era eliminates the possibility of centralized governance in the Cardano ecosystem.
The Voltaire era was launched on the Cardano network on September 1, with the implementation of the Chang hard fork. Under the new governance model, ADA holders will elect decentralized representatives (Dreps) to oversee network affairs.
Additionally, Hoskinson said Cardano’s Voltaire era has helped solve the governance trilemma. He noted that efficiency, effectiveness, and integrity are core qualities of good governance, and Chang upgraded the process of incorporating these factors into the Cardano network.
While acknowledging that he previously played a major role in Cardano governance, he said the blockchain can now thrive with or without his involvement. Notably, Hoskinson has stated several times after the hard fork that his role on the Cardano network has been significantly reduced, declaring Cardano independent.
